Trade in the Cameroons had ;increased i 0 per cent in the last year, and '’ons icier able mineral wealth had been discovered on the Caroline and Ladrone Islands, forty million tops of phosphates being found on the island of Nauru alone. Herr Dernberg promised to try to safeguard the ten millions of natives in East Africa igainst any brutal display of power, and added if the Government acceded to the wishes of the white farmers, l he entire labor force of the colony would emigrate to British territory, where the labor conditions are lighter and more humane.
