The case in which John Thomas Irwin, police constable, was charged with having at AVuerenga-a-lhika on January 2L)th assaulted Robert MeItretiii'y was remanded till February 21st by consent of counsel. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Charles Ellis Davies was charged with having on February 10th used obscene language in a pulllie place at Te Karaka. Accused was -represented by Mr. Maim, and Sergeant AA’illiains conducted the prosecution. Accused entered -a plea of not guilty. Constable- Doyle, Te Karaka, said that at 10 p.m. on .the day in question he was in the street opposite accused’s house;. Accused was outside the house and was wrangling with his family. Obscene language was used freely. Speaking to bis wile, accused -made use of words which he would put iii. The house was close to the road. —-By My Mann: Accused was a chain anil a half away Iron* witness, hut he could ho heard ‘for a much -greater distance. John T. -Cassidy, livery stable keeper, Te Kanaka, substantially corroborated the evidence of the constable. Tile constable did not draw his attention to tho language -used. Could not recollect hearing the words tiie constable had put in, nor did he remember the constable drawing his attention to them particularly.. Defendant, sworn, said lie was ■ under the influence of liquor, and could not remember anything about the occurrence. The S.M. said that drunk or .sober no -man should use to his wife such language as alleged by -the constable. Accused would be fined C2. with costs 18s 2d, in deif-am-lt 7 days’ imprisonment. RESISTING THE POLICE. Herbert George Hooper was lined £l, with costs ,2s in default 4 days’ imprisonment, 'for having resisted a police constable while being arrested on a charge of drunkenness. Hooper, a first offender, was fined 5s with costs 2s.
