The Department of Industries and Commerce lias received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 16tli February; The mutton market is dull. Canterbury mutton is very scarce, and is quoted at lid nominal. Southland and W.M.E. brands arc quoted at 3jj, North Island 3]d, Australian 2Jd, and River Plate 3d. The lamb market is a shade weaker, but there is a fair demand. The following are current quotations: Canterbury lamb fljd to Gd, other than Canterbury 5Jd to Sjjd, Australian 4]d. There has been no alteration in the beef market since last week. There is a further gcncr.il advance in the butter market. New Zealand is quoted at 150 s, Danish 151 s, Australian 118 s, Siberian 144 s per cwt. The choeso market is qu.iot, hut firm. AVliite makes arc quoted at Gls 6d, colored G2s Gd. The hemp market is weak. Tlio following are current quotations: Good fair grade £27 15s, fair grado £26 15s, tow £lO per tom lAlardi and April shipments, good fair grade £27 10s, fair grade £2G 10s, fair current manilla £27 5s per ton. The first shipment of hemp from St Helena proved of gootl quality, and sold at £27 10s per ton. Tow from the island realised £l3 per ton. The cocksfoot market is quiet, but firm at last quotations. Tho following are current quotations for Bradford tops: GO’s, low crossbreds low crossbreds, Is Jd, 44’s, medium crossbreds, Is 2d, 50’s, lialf-breds, Is GJd, 46’s, i-brods, Is 9ifd, GO’s merinos 2s lid. The market is quiet. The following are the shipments from Riiver Plate during tho month of January :—‘Mutton —London, 93309 carcases; Liverpool, 111,363; Hull, 15,892; Newcastle.. 400; Cardiff, 420; Southampton, 1300. Limb—London, G9GO; .Liverpool, 984; Hull, 987; Newcastle, 200; Cardiff, nil, Southampton, 14. Butter: 'The quantity for various ports was 11.548 cwt. BUTTER. Press Association. PALMERSTON, Feb. 17.
