LONDON MARKETS. Writing under date London January 3, Messrs W. Weddel and Co. report on tho frozen meat market as follows: MUTTON. Arrivals of New Zealand amount to 7,324 carcases. As usual at this season of the year, the general demand for mutton has been very dragging; but, in consequence of only fight importations from New Zealand, and as stocks in store are moderate, sales have not been pressed, and values remain without change, Realisations of the bulk of present offerings are prejudiced by the more or less stale condition of the carcases through long storage; and freshly arrived parcels enjoy a decided preference. ' Prime Canterbury sheep 48/56 lbs. are quoted at Kl. per lb.; 56/64 lbs. at 3Jd. per lb., and heavier weights at 3jd anil 3/1 per lb. Southland and best brands oi North island sheep realise 3jjd and /id. for small and medium weights; heavy carcases and secondary quality being offered at 3|d. and 3/1. per lb. Ewes are relatively scarce and are quoted at * 3W ' USUIS.

Arrivals amount to 341,<25 carcases from Australia, 727 _ carcases from Yew Zealand, anil 3950 carcases from the River Plate. The Christinas demand for prime beet, poultry, etc , checked the output of lambs; but subsequently there has been some, revival in the inquiry both for New Zealand and Australian lambs, there j 3 a limited demand for Canterbury lambs from those buyers who always use a few pf that description, and prices are firm in view of the diminishing stocks in store, while supplies will not be replenished until the beginning of February. ihe higher prices demanded for fresh-killed mutton have created a slightly bettei inquiry for the heavier grades of lamb, but "noi sufficiently to affect prices. Prime Canterbury iambs are quoted at sgd for under 361 b; sid for 36/42 lb and 5d for 42/oOlb. Southland lambs are offered at id per lb below Canterbury prices. Prime lambs of all weights are steady at 4Jd to oil, secondary quality is quiet at 4’ ( d to 4Jd and inferior lambs are weak at to iw

Arrivals consist of 103 quarters from’ New Zealand. -1652 quarters from Australia, and 8-1,019 quarters from the River Plate. There was little or no inquiry lor frozen beet prior to Christmas, but subsequently

there has been some revival in the demand for forequarters, assisted by the present spell of cold weather. The sale of hindquarters has ‘been difficult throughout, and the tendoncv of prices is easier. WOOL. The close of the year did not bring to light any very fresh features in lUe situation, and the market continues to present the same hesitating tone and general want oi confidence which was so noticeable throughout the recent series <>l sates here. The depressing influences ol the financial troubles which originated in America.have been toll throughout trade generally, and it seems now dear that even with an easier money market a complete recovery will not come about all m a moment. As far as this country is concerned, "there still continues to be a very lair consumption going on, but cancellations of orders are not unknown, and the outlook is not all that, could lie desired. Abroad, business has been extremely dillicult, and the huge imivliases which were made at tfie Inchest point of the Australian marlad's arc weighing heavily on the minds of their owners, who, as matters stand at present, are laced with heavy loss's. __
