SWIMMING.
The New Zealand championships have this year been allotted to Napier, and it behoves local enthusiasts' to luir.ry on the formation of a club, so that representatives from Povert.v Bay may be at the cirnival. At pre-sent-we do not boast anybody who lias shown signs of being a budding New Zealand champion, but there may be Severn} in tlip district. Champions or not there are a number of swimmers in Poverty Bay who .would give a goo<l account of themselves in the handicap events. Already Cecil Hoaly is swimming in a manlier suggestive ol' the likelihood that lie will show something exceptional this season, though it is extremely improbable that Daniels’ do and two-fifths seconds may be knocked out. In East Sydney Club’s “hundred’’ handicap at Bi|sliciitte.rs (Bay Baths recently Cecil broke dr—a line feat, indeed. Tlieo.- Tartakovcv writes to the Sydney “Referee” from London, ami, among other things, says:—“l don't, s’pose C.M.D. (Daniels) accepted the New Sqiith Wales Amateur Swimming Association’s invitation. You j have no 25vds bath, in which one can see bottom all the way, in Sydney,
both of •which aro essential to his swims. As things are out there, there would he nothing to choose between Daniels and Cecil Hoaly.” “Tart” finishes; “I have picked up a couple of iDaniels’ methods, and will test them through the Winter. I miss the sun- very much. They have had no Summer in the British Isles this year, so you can .sympathise with a poor used-to-was sun halted Australian.”
