BOWLING.

(By “Toucher.”.) The semi-final between Crawford and Simpson’s teams in the Gisborne Club’s tournament was played on Thursday evening and was expected to provide a great game but, contrary to anticipations the issue was never in doubt, tho former team winning easily. The teams were:- 1. Clarkson, Morgan, W. R. Clarkson and Crawford (ski;)) v. Lawless, Redstone, Alillai- and Simpson (skip). From tho first -head Crawford took tlio lead and when at about the sixth he added a six points score to Ins former lead the task ol the opposition -heo.une almost hopeless. Simpson made a bad start and with liis team playing in and out for the first ten head's he got too far behind to have hope of winning. In the second half he played a much better game, blit the opposition was too solid and gave him no opportunity to retrieve the position. Crawford’s nos 2 and 3 each played -a great game and with number i holding -liis own Crawford was given- every opportunity, Tint his play was as sound as ever and iio got ill some beautiful shots. None of Simpson’s team played consistently and the skip himself was poor ill the first half, blit in the second both in drawing and driving lie put in- some excellent work. Slowly but surely the time approaches for the North Island Bowling Association’s Tournament. Auckland is to be the convincing ground, and right royally, so I hear, are the citizens of the Waitemata City making -arrangements for the gathering. Auckland has earned for itself a name for hospitality and entertainment-, and oil this occasion it is not likely to belie its reputation. Besides tlio usual round of games furnished by the Association, the citizens of tlio Northern City have arranged for extra games with handsome prizes. This is apart altogether from tho entertainment they are providing. The following are the matches provided by the Association: — 1 N’J’ER-CLU B MATCHES. First prize: Association’s certificate and eight pairs of silver-mounted howls, gold medals, or trophies to the value of 50s each. Second prize: Association’s certificate, and eight pairs of ivory-mount-ed bowls, gd'd medals, or trophies to the value of oOs each. These are to be played, if possible, each club against each dull, until concluded, the scores to ho by clubs wins.

Should there ho more than 16 clubs represented, they are To be divided into two or more sections, each section to play to a finish; winners of each section playing tho final, and the winner of this final to bo declared tbe winner of tlio Inter-d’.iib Matches. Any club entering for inter-club matches must provide two-rinks, and no club will lie allowed to play more than two rinks, nor must there he any interchange of players between tlio rinks. A penalty' of £5 is to be strictly enforced on any club which commences play, ami, from other reasons than illness, or other justifiable causo allowed by the Tournament Committee, discontinues before the final of tho Inter-club matches. Namina-tions and entrance fees (10s eacli rink) are to be forwarded to tho lion secretary, Wellington, on, or hn.foro Tuesday, 31st December. 7907 CHAMPION BANNER AND SHIELD This Banner and Shield is to he given to the club winning the Interclub matches if that club be affiliated to the Northern Bowling Association, but- if it be not affiliated, then tho club affiliated to tho Northern Bowling Association winning a filial between the club affiliated to the Northern Bowling Association having the highest aggregate of wins in each section, and will remain in the possession of the winning club until the next Inter-club tournament, held under the auspices of the Association, in conformity with rule 18, of N.B.A. rules. SPECIAL PRIZE. A special prize of eight trophies, to the value of £1 Is each wifi ho given to the club having the least number of points scored against it in the In-ter-clul) matches, apart from the first and second prize-winners. PAIRS MATCHES. First prize: Association’s certificate and two pairs of silver-mounted bowls, gold medal, or trophies to the value of 50s each. Second prize: Association’s certificate and two pairs of ivory-mounted bowls, gold medals, or trophies to the value of 30s each SINGLES MATCHES. First prize: Association’s certificate and pair of silver-mounted howls, gelid medal, or trophy to tho value of 50s. Second prize: Association’s certificate and pair of ivory-mounted bowls, gold medal, or trophy to the value of 30s each. Tlio Pairs and Singles matches are open to players not engaged in Interclub matches. _ They, are to be played winners against- winners until concluded—concurrently with tho Interdlub matches—on any rin'ks available for the purpose. Singles immediately after Pairs are concluded.

Tho Tournament Committee decide when Pairs and Singles matches are to he played. If any competitor fails to turn up at the proper time, the Committee may disqualify him, unless satisfied that such player could not be' present-. lintries close at the Star hotel, Auckland, at 9 o’clock on Saturday night, the 4th January, 1908. Entrance fees: Alp -entraneo fees are to be handed to the secretary of tho Association at tlie time of entry, viz, 5s for each pair, and 2s 6d for singles , GENERAL CONDITIONS.

The rules of the Northern Bowling Association of New Zealand shall be followed during the tournament. All games to bo 21 heads up, drawn -heads to count. If a tie at that point, an extra head or heads to be played. All competitors must bo members of ai club that is affiliated tq an Association, and must wear the colors of the club they are playing for. No changing of players will be allowed except in cases of illness or enforced absence from Auckland, in which case a substitute may be ‘appointed by or subject to the approval of the Match Committee.

Rule 17 willl be strictly adhered lo in regard to size, bias, testing, and stamping of bowls. Bowlers to remain at tho end from which they play until the third players have <|elivered their last bowls, then all'change ends with tho skip. For the Champion Banner and Shield, the scores in Inter-club matches of clubs affiliated to the Northern Bowling Association of New Zealand only to count.

All disputes to be refereed to tlie M’n'tch sir Tournament Committee, and the decision of the latter shall bo final.

It- is instated upon that skips shall be held accountable for their scoring cards, which must be properly filled in, signed by both skips, and handed to the secretary, or his appointee, immdiately op the conclusion of each match. The Touni'iimeut Committee reserve the right to strike out any match, ii it is considered time will not permit of its being played. COMMITTEES. Tournament Committee : The President (ill-. A. M. Myers) and Vicepresident (Mr. J. M. Mennie) of the Northern Bowling Association, together with one member from eacn club competing. Match Committee; To be elected at Auckland by the Tournament Committee. The Toui'miment Cqmni’ttee will meet at the Star hotel. Auckland, on Saturday, -HU January, at S p.m.; and on Monday and following evenings at the same hour, If necessary. AUCKLAND CITIZENS’ TROPHIES The citizens of Auckland have presented to the Association for rink competition after the tournament, trophies to the value of 26 guineas,

which will bo allocated as follows: — First prize. President’s four gold medals, and four trophies to tlie value of 3 guineas each. Second prize: President's four geild medals, and four trophies to the value of 14 guineas each. Third prize: Four trophies to tho valuo of 2 guineas each.
