CR. AVHINRAY AND WAIHIRERE
[To the Editor.] Sir. —I observed in your report of the last Council meeting that Cr. AYliinray came down armed with photographs anil samples, wherewith to edifv and instruct the public in general,'and the Borough Council in particular. as to the value of AV-aihirerc limestone .for fertilising purposes. •Surelv Gisborne must be a sleepy hollow, and its inhabitants ltip van AV inkiest if they do not know already that lime has properties, in common with many other minerals, which, if scientifically applied, produce the best results in agriculture. But what value could such a- pantomimic exhibition have on- the point which was under discussion, viz., the value of AYaihirore stone for road purposes? I ascertain from the perusal of your columns that every professional man in Gisborne has confirmed tlio opinion of the Borough Engineer—that it -is an excellent material for road purposes, and that there is an abundance of it—and yet Cr. AYhinray, who cannot by any possible stretch of imagination have any knowledge of the properties of stone (except as fertilizers), and in all probability cannot determine one class of stone from another, poses as the Great Civic Poo Pali, and tries to dominate the Council bymeans of his chimerical ideas, based on a total ignorance of the subject, thus blocking the progress of the town by his vain display ; of mental phantasmagoria. As i citizen, Air. AA'liiuray holds a very high i- roiion in" the estimation of the to., .-..-people, and deservedly so. hut to d- " >vcr his parallel in- civic circles would bo ns difficult a matter as the search-for the “Hairv Dysoxylon” ji New South AA'ale's.—I am, etc., Gisborne, Dec. 19. Cll.
