THE ALL-RED ROUTE. SUPPORT FROM THE TIMES, FLEET TO COST SIX MILLIONS. United Press Association—Copyright (Received Dec. 18, 10 p m.) LONDON. Dec. 18. The Times hopes in tho interests of the All-Red route that the Commonwealth’s projected negotiations with Ottawa will ho conducted in a sufficiently liberal spirit to remove any temporary ill-feeling which Mr. DeaJcin’s tariff policy may have excited in official circles in Canada. Proceeding to discuss the All-Red route, the Times estimates the total annual rubsidy for some years will be £BOO,000 or more—nearly one-half of Britain’s contribution. The nailer calculates that the fleet will! cost six mil.iions. This amount could not ho raised at a low rate of interest without engaging the British Government’s credit, according to the precedent of the two Cunarders: but all these difficulties of detail would probably be overcome with goodwill. The Times emphasises that the Imperial Government, which had been unable to meet the colonies on the subject of preference, had pldged Britain to the principle of the All-Red route, and only impracticability would justify its abandonment. CANADA BENT ON RETALIATION (Received Dec. 18, 11.45 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 18. Comments of tho Ministerial press in Ottawa confirm the first report of the intention to retaliate The Toronto Globe declares that giving a bonus to a steamship line to Australia, where tiro cost of passing the Custom House exceeds the cost of a voyage round the world, is too palpably illogical for Canadian policy. It adds that it is foolish activity to pay simultaneously to get goods in and keep them out.
