POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. SECOND DAY. Beautiful slimmer weather was experienced for tlio second day s racing, and the attendance was again very large,-and taken with tho previous day should constitute a record. Racing was very interesting, and a number of closo finishes resulted, that ol" tho Alakaraka Handicap being worth going a long way to witness. Air. D. It. Do Costa had control of the general arrangements, and, owing to the absence of tho Hon. Captain Tucker, Air. Al. Kingston occupied the judge’s box. Speculation on the various races was very brisk, and the amount put through tlio machine on the AVailcanao Handicap was tho largest which has ever been experienced on any one race in this district. The investments for the day totalled 98448, which with £7342 on Thursday made the big total of £15,790 for the meeting, an increaso of £4948 on the figures for the corresponding meeting last year. This amount easily established a record for Poverty Bay. The following are tihe details of tlie day’s racing: SECOND AVELTER HANDICAP, of 40 sovs, second 5 sovs from stake. weight 8.7. was responsible for a considerable delay in getting off, playing uj> and giving Porter an anxious time. "When the barrier rose, however, all got well away with the exception of Torona, who lost a couple of lengths. Nestorean showed out in front for a furlong, after which he yielded pride of place to Glen Afric, who held his lead until entering tlie straight. San Cruz, who had been lying handy, then came with a great run, arid won comfortably by a length and a half, a short head separating second and third. Time, lmin 48jsec. On totalisator, £B9B. Round the. back stretch Morpeth and Local Option raced in company, Cinque failing back beaten. On rounding the home turn it looked my odds on Alorpeth, but Te Uira, 'vlio had been last all the way, put

: n a magnificent run, and eventually won by a length from Alorpeth, with Local Option at his girths in third place. Cinque fell at the last hurdle, but Barron, her rider, luckily escaped •without injury. It was a ding-dong finish, and O’Connell deserves great praise for "the handling of the winner. Also started: 260 Reay 6.9. This race resulted in a somewhat hollow victory for Air. This was one of the best races seen in the district for some time. San Cruz, as in the first race, gave the starter a lpt of trouble. However, after a long delay, they got away fairly well. Hinetitama and Taura showed out first, a clear length ahead of the others, who were running bunched together. The leading pair were running neck and neck along the badlt with Lady Rohina, Ladylike, and Reservoir abreast still about half a length behind, San Cruz bringing up the rear. Coming round the far end Ladylike and San Cruz joined issue, and moved up to the leaders, but Hinetitama had a little bit too much in hand for tho rest, and ran out a good winner by three-quarters of a length. San Cruz was beaten in the last few strides by Ladylike and Reservoir, and tlie four finished well together. Lady Rohina was fifth and Taura last. Tiiiie. lmin 44 3-ssec. On totalisator, £1351. Competition got slightly the better of an excellent start, and they all ran well together with Spate slightly in the rear. The Squatter looked a likely winner coining round for tlie homo turn, but Spate, not to bo denied, came right through her field, and although strongly challenged by The Squatter, maintained her lead, and won with something to spare. This was the best betting race of tho day, and tho public soon installed Kirsty as a slightly : better favorite than Linklcss, but- tlie '

others wero well supported. Thoro was a long delay at the post, and when tho field was despatched Peurl Reef and Cantata were smartest out of tho barrier. This pair led tho way round the back, when Kirsty, who was lying' fourth up to that time joined tho leaders. Although Pearl Reef made a bold bid for victory, tho Sylvia Park filly held him safe, and won comfortably by a length. Cantata failed when the pinch was on, finishing three lengths away third.
