PALMERSTON, Sept-.. 30. During the recent flood in the Manawatu river, a man named Bell was drowned near Hennessy’s mill at Oroua bridge. Bell and a mate wero crossing tile river in a boat oil their way to the town. The boat was upset and the occupants thrown into the water. Neither of the men could swim, and Bell was drowned. His mate clutched the boat and drifted ashore alter some time. Owing to die flood dragging operations were impossible and tlie body was not recovered. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 30.
A telegram was received by Inspector Gillies from the coast at Little River to the effect that two young men, Claude Rooney, aged 16, ancr Lancelot Rooney, aged 21, bad been drowned in Lake Forsyth through the capsizing of a canoe in which they were sailing. An inquest was held this morning concerning the death of Charles Hodges, who was found in a dying condition in Derby street on Saturday afternoon and expired when being conveyed to the hospital. The jury returned a verdict that death was due to injuries accidentally received by being thrown out of a cart.
WELLINGTON, Sept.lo™ At an inquest on Captain McKenzie, master of the Camphill, a verdict of suicide while temporarily insanowas returned*. The evidence showed that deceased had a lot of worry with his seamen. He leaves a widow and six children in Scotland. MASTERTON, Sept. 30. A young man named Stanley Hansen, 21 years old, was killed to-day by a dray falling on him.
