A MISCONDUCTED HOTEL.

STRONG REMARKS BY LICENSING COMMITTEE. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Sept. 25. The Christchurch Licensing Committee met this afternoon, when the position of Messrs Manning and Co. in regard to the Criterion Hotel in Gloucester street was dealt with. The committeo at its xirovious meeting decided that neither the licensee nor his wife was a lit person to conduct the house, but final decision in regard to the renewal was held over for a week to consider the position of tho “innocent parties,” Messrs Manning and Co., who havo a mortgage of £B6OO over tho property. The chairman stated that the committee wero of opinion that they had power under section 76 of tho Licensing Act to cancel the license, but as it had been notified that the previous licensee, Green, bad ceased from that day to havo any further interest in tho house, the committee did not propose to take any further action, but would turn over tho leaf, on what tho committee considered was one of the most discreditable episodes that had occurred in connoceion with licensed houses in Christchurch. Counsel for the new licensee stated that all tho females employed by the last lieenseo had been discharged, and that for tho future only two barmaids would bo emjdoyed at any one time.
