An influential deputation of Catholics, headed by Archbishop Bourne, protested that -tho new regulations must destroy the denominational character of the training colleges. The Premier maintained the' equity of the regulations. Ho declared that it yvas not desired to impair the present character of the colleges. If the regulations did destroy it the colleges’ situation yvould be reconsidered, but the Government claimed a fair trial. Smith yvas sentenced to servitude for life and. Churchill, alias Chicago May, to 15 years for attempting to niiirder Madame Guerin in June last. - The Board of Education has stopped rifle shooting at Eynsford and Shoreham public elementary schools. The barque Eagle Crag, which collided yvith tho Kakapo, put into port to-night to repair damage to one of her plates and bulwarks. Received July 27, 0.16 p.m. MELBOURNE. July 26. After nearly three weeks’ work the Tariff Commission has concluded its labors, and the final reports have been handed to the Governor-General.
