Referring to tho proposal for tlio establishment of ail AU-Red route, tho London “Spectator” says: buoli a proposal is perfectly compatible with Free-trade, and wo heartily welcome it. In our opinion, tho scheme will not he ultimately complete without a tunnel to Ireland. That is • pen to none of the objections raised to the Channel Tunnel. The “Southland Nows” states that Mr. J. W'hipp, who works a beach claim at Pallia, unearthed some interesting relics recently while conducting sluicing operations. One of I tho most, curious was a metal plate I that lmd apparently been affixed to a soldiers helmet, bearing the lettering. “Closeburn Sharpshooters.” Tho metal was black and encrusted through long burial when found, but Oil being polished tlio inscription came out quite distinctly. Near by were the remans of ail old flintlock rifle, j How long those had been deposited | there it was imnossihlo to say, hut ] Mr W'hipp thinks from the depth at which they were discovered on the beach, namely, lift—that they must date back to Captain Cook’s time. “Closeburn Sharpshooters” was nro- I ably the title of some old regiment, of which there is no local record. In addition to there articles Were found a. greestoue sacred mere, a beautifully polished Maori chisel, ami a bono spear about 2ft iu length, the end of which was missing. None of the I Maoris ill the Colas Ray have any knowledge of hone spears, and it may therefore lie taken for granted that tlio relics date a long way back in New Zealand history. “Closeburn Sharpshooters,” ought ot supply a clue to the date.
