Press Association. NAPIER, yesterday. The Supreme Court opened before Judge Cooper to-day. His Honor commented oil the length of the calendar, there being 21 charges against 17 persons, and said it was unfortunate that in a distret so prosperous there should he so much crime. The list contains no very' serious charges. The slander suits Plowman v. Gleeson and Simson v. Tliornley have been settled out of Court by defendants apologising. Robert Prust alias Priest, wlio pleaded guilty to burglary and theft, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, and declared to he an habitual criminal. NELSON, yesterday. The Supreme Court opened before Judge Button.On the grand jury being sworn Mr. Maginnitv. a barrister took exception to another solicitor’s managing clerk being on the grand jury and being chosen foreman thereof. His Honor sai dnotliing could be done, as the jury had been sworn, but, where possible, solicitors’ clerks should be exempted from serving on juries. Peter Gilmour aged 17, pleaded guilty to assaulting a young girl, the charge being altered to common assault from -one of intent. As the father of accused said he had given his so na sound thrashing the judge ordered prisoner to come up for sentence when called ujion, on the understanding that his father would give him a further sound thrashing in the presence of a constable. William Hughes, aged 19, for theft of a watch, was remanded for sentence.
