local patriotism Tlie National Dairy Show hold .by tl,o Manawatu A. and I’. Association at Palmerston North last wvok »1£ nonrs to have surpassed all foimer it cords, both as regards the attendance and the actual merits ot the Shop. An immense building "' l,s ® l le f 1 ! dairy machinery, cheese and buttei exhibits ot other products of the soil, and tor tlio foul dajs and nights that tlio Show was open the aisles were packed with admiring throngs. Every dairy firm ot any consequence in the country was ren resented in the exhibits. About 70 factories from the North anil South Islands were competitors in the butter and cheese classes, and the Conferences which were held in conjunction with the Show brought delegates from every dairy district in New Zealand. The Government showed its interest in the undertaking by making a most excellent display ol the work of its experimental farms, and the Agricultural Department was represented by officials, including the Minister himself. '' T „„ In short the Palmorston North residents have succeeded in making their annual fixturo a National Dairy Show worthy of the name, and ot the country as a whole. In doing so they have achieved results which will b< far-reaching in their effects. Already the Show acts as a magnet for people in all parts of the country, and the thousands of visitors who attend ta. the lodging accommodation or the town to its fullest extent, and the resultant expenditure of money is . naturally keenly appreciated by the townspeople. Then again the management are by no means satisfied to rest on thou oars and maintain the present stallcAird, high, though that undoubtedly is. They look forward to the time when the Main Trun'k line * be completed and the products or tj Waikato, and other intermediate districts will come forward and help to swell their entries. In the ordinary course of things these would have found tlieir way to Auckland, but the Palmerston North residents have secured a hold on the dairying interests ot the colony that- only years of gross neglect -could disturb. As a matter of fact it’can safely be computed that with the present executive at the > head of affairs that hold will be increased as the years go by. The marvellous success or the Manawafcu A. and P. Association in this matter has long been a mystery to those in other centres, hut alter all that success is the natural result of patriotism and combined effort on the part of those concerned in the general welfare of t-lie district. The Executive had to contend againt all the obstacles that invariably face those who attempt anything that is really worth doing. They sustained a loss on the first Winter Show, and had to submit to the sneers of the “know-alls” who had predicted failure from the outset. But having once embarked on the scheme they took hold with both hands, an invincible determination to see it through, making experience serve as an invaluable teacher; and, abovo all, they were prepared to make sacrifices. There are many men in Palmerston whose financial interests are so great that every hour is of value to them, who devote their entire time during the Show week, and for some days before-hand-entirely- to its work, and, moreover, they do not quarrel. Differences of opinion are quickly settled by reasonable argument, after which all work whole-heartedly on the lines ap proved by tlie majority. The peoph of Palmerston North have earned the gratitude of all concerned in the dairyindustry in New Zealand by- tlie superb show they have arranged, and at tlie same time have presented a magnificent object-lesson of what can be achieved when a few determined and patriotic spirits band togethei and with ample confidence in their district, work for the common welfare.
