LATE NEW ZEALAND.
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Tho second case arising out of the inquiry held into the circumstances surrounding a lire at a house in West street owned by Margaret Walker, on April 17th, was heard at the Police Court. William Walker, husband of Margaret Walker, and by occupation a house painter, was charged with having procured James Crowther to set the house on fire. Crowther had already confessed to stting the house on fire. After hearing the evidence, accused reserved his defence, pleading not guilty. He was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed, accused in £2OO, and two sureties of JS LOO each. Christohurcb, last night.
At a meeting of the Education Board to-day Mr Jas. C. Dromgool, 8.8. C,, at present in the Stratfordf District High School, was appointed instructor in agriculture.
Napier, last night. At the inquest on the body of Richard Dolbel, junr., tho jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death accidentally owing to a fall from his horse.
Wellington. last night. Sir Robert Stout has been re-elected to represent Victoria College Council on the University Senate. Dr. Findlay has been elected chairman of the Victoria College Council. The Ikaroa Native Land Board will consist of Mr Kensington, Undersecretary for Lands, Judge Edgar, Under-Secretary for Native Affairs, and Rupuha Hianga. Mr Marchant, Under-Secretary for Lands and Surveyor-General, who is retiring from the public service on a pension, was to-day presented by the Acting-Premier at a gathering at Bellamy’s with a cheque for a subservices to the colony since 1860 were made by the Hon. Hall-Jones and Hon. T. Y. Duncan.
DunediD, last night, Local representatives of the Liverpool, London and Globe Insurance Company have received thw following cable from London :—Frisco : Tho total amount of insurance in the damaged portion of the town is £870,U00. It is impossible yet to ascertain the actual loss under the policies, but all claims can be paieSr without touching, the reserve or altering dividend.
The census returns show that the population of the borough of Mosgiel is 1508, an increase of 45 over last census.
