The people of the Far North have boon transmogrified. From being the most mutinous and rebellious, tboy have suddenly, and without giviDg due warning to the rest of the colony, become the loyaleet, most dutiful, and most enthusiastic of King Dick’s subjects. A year ago the air was thick with the ominous .mutterings that camo from the region between the Waitemata and the North Cape. The conviction had settled down in the minds of the Far Northerners that tboy would never obtain justice so long as their terriI lory remained an integral part of New Zealand. They could not say that thoy were subjected to taxation without representation, but they complained loudly that I for every pound they paid in taxes they I only got a farthing moro or less in the shape of roads and other public works. — Observer.
