Considerable progress has been made with the outting of tho new harbor channel, and it is expected as a certainty that an opening 200 ft wide for steamers will bo available six mouths from date.
Considerable indignation is expressed in iooal amusement oiroies at tho decision of the Government not to lot the Provincial Hall in the future for concerts, dauoos, etc. Tho notion is duo to representations from the owners of tho Friendly Societies’ Hall. Organised notion will be taken to appeal against the Government land valuation, whiob has raised values iu some instances 120 per oent., and in others has lowered them similarly. Obituary : Charles Thorpe, a Motuoka pioneer, aged 84.
A fire broke out this afternoon in Panama House, a large boarding-house in Oollingwood street, owood by Percy Adams and occupied by Deßlois. Tho origin is unknown, but it came from one of the bedrooms. A high southerly wind was blowing. The plaoe was gutted. Nothing was saved. Deßlois was away at Westport, and only Mrs Deßlois, her daughter, anda .fow boarders were at homo at the time.
