WAIMATA VALLEY.

AREAS BEING CUT UP FOE DAIRYING. The progress of the dairying industry in this district will shortly receive a further impetus by the cutting up of some fine country that has hitherto been used for the depasturing of sheep. Messrs A. MePhai and W. E. Akroyd are each having having their estates sub-divided into suitable holdings. Major Winter has been engaged in the work of sub division, which has now beeu completed, and the lithograph plans will shortly be placed before the public. About three thousand acres are thus being dealt with, the areas being from 100 to 200 acres. The Waimata Valley is noted for its splendid fattening qualities, some of the finest stock in New Zealand coming from there. The contract has been let for the erection of a butter factory on a site opposite the hall, the contractor being Mr C. Woods. The distance of the factory from Gisborne is sixteen miles, and it will have a capacity for treating of the milk, if required, from over 1000 cows. The country is supplied with excellent water all the year round, and includes high land and flat. It is probable that other owners of property in that portion of the district will also devote their land to dairying purposes, and it is reported that Mr Branson intends turning to this account the property recently purchased from Mr W. F. Richardson.
