THE LABOR QUESTION,
By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Capetown, Jan. 18. Rand companies contemplate an expenditure of 504 millions on deop levels. Amongst tho projects boing discussed is the possibility of mining at a depth of 12,000 feet. Tho engineers of the Chamber of Mines at Johannesburg informed Mr Chamberlain that tho earnings of 12,000 whites engaged in the minos averago £BSB a year, representing an in creaso in tho cost of production of 2s lOd per ton. If white labor woro adopted exclusively it would represent an increaso of 10s per ton, rendering half the mines unprofitable.
