CHICAGO FROZEN MEAT IN ENGLAND.

•• A TIUAL SHIPMENT, 3f IS THE UNITED STATES A COMI'ETITOII \> London, Oct 81. Chicago has long sent its beef, not to mention pork, to England, and this meat coming upon the market not frozen but chilled, it ha; taken a high v position, says the London correspondent lof the XX Herald. Some years ago an attempt was made to ship chilled mutton, but that was a failure. Now, however, another attempt is to be made, the mutton in this instance being frozen and not ; chilled : that is to say, the temperature in [ the freezing chambers is kept just below, | i instead of iust above, freezing point. j j Ibis week the agents of a Chicago firm j have boen engaged in selling a cargo of j frozen mutton at Id per lb ex ship. This means that carriage will have to be paid | from Liverpool to Southampton, but still it is cheaper than the present price of New Zealand sheep, or, in fact, than any mutton in London. When asked whether there was to he regular competition from the United States in the market for frozen mutton, the agent for the exporters in Chicago was not able to say. The cargo on sale, however, would be delivered, it was expected, next week. Much, if not everything,"would of course depend upon j the su'»°ss or otherwise of this trial ship- j ment. Inquiries a view to see- ! ing whether the consignment was being j made by the American Meat Trust in i order to force an entry into British ! markets failed to elicit definite informs- | tion—in all except the fact that the mut- j ton is coming, is for sale, and is being j sold, secrets are being wc-ii kept. In any case the shipping of mutton from Chicago means some “turning of the tables,” seeing that the producers iu Australia ana ! New Zealand—particularly in the latter coloDy —are understood to be looked forward to supplying the United States with meat.
