COOK’S DAY.

THE CARNIVAL AT ORMOND,

PUELIC HOLIDAY DECLARED,

Arrangements in connection with the monster picnic and athletic carnival, to be held at Ormond on Thursday next, are in a forward state, and given fine weather there should be a large gathering. A meeting of the Holiday Committee was held yesterday morning, the Mayor presiding, to consider an application from the Cook Memorial Committee for a whole holiday on Thursday next; when the picnic at Ormond will be held.

The Chairman Eaid it was to bo regretted that a holiday was not asked for the Bth, which was Labor Day, and a general holithroughout the colony, in addition to being' the day on which Captain Cook landed.

It was pointed out that the committee had made their arrangements for the 9th, being under tbe impression that the shopkeepers preferred that day to the Wednesday. It was too late to alter the day, as the stock sales in the country were altered to suit. The Mayor remarked that Labor Dayhad not been kept as a holiday in Gisborne in the past. It was decided that the request of the Cook Committee be granted, and that a full public holiday be proclaimed on Thursday next in honor of Captain Cook's landing, "and to enable the people to attend the picnic at Ormond.
