A SYDNEY SCANDAL

IGNORING A VERDICT.

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Sept. 29.

Tho position of the Government is likely to be challenged over the action of tho Attornoy-Goneral regarding tho case of Friedman, a well-known merchant and money-lender, who was sentenced to twelve months on a charge of receiving a large quantity of stolen property. Tho Judge, in passing sentence, said that if it had been within his province to decide tho case ho would not have found accused guilty, but must abide by the .decision of the jury. Within 24 hours of the passing of sentence, Friedman was released. The press and public raised a great outcry against what they claim to be deliberate ignoring of the jury system. The matter will be aired in the Assembly to-morrow.
