RAILWAY WORKERS.
STRIKE IN VICTORIA MAY BE AVOIDED.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrighi
Melbourne, Aug. 16. Thore is now every probability that the strike of railway men will be avoided. At a conference of the Minister of Railways and the men’s dolegato the latter handed in resolutions expressing willingness not to persist in their demand on condition that classification should be brought in at the end of twelve months’ reduction.
THE PRESENT POSITION.
THE MEN’S GRIEVANCE.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Telephoned from Napier.) Melbourne, Aug, 17. The railway men’s representatives, in a series of resolutions, handed to the Minister of Railways, stated that while they had decided to abandon extreme measures, their keen sense of opposition to tho principle of percentage of reduction remains undisturbed. Every constitutional means would be resorted to in order to urge the final abandonment of what was believed to be an unjust class of taxation.
The position now is that a percentage reduction of the salaries of public servants is made throughout Victoria from the first of the present month, Government merely promising to introduce a Classification Bill in the ordinary course of business.
