A conference of leaders of capital and labor in New York elected a committee, with Senator Mark Hanna as chairman, to try to harmonise their interests, avert strikes, and resort to arbitration when both sides are agreeable. Lord Brassey suggests a scheme for providing a naval reserve of one hundred, thousand men, at a cost uf two millions.. Ho advocates one hundred scholarships fortraining apprentices and subsidising shipowners to train officers to serve in thenaval rosorve. Melbourne, Dee. 20. Large army contracts for hay and other produce for South Africa havobeon secured locally. The Bicycle Club withholds tho prizemoney in the Wheel ilaco at tho Austral Meeting, pending tho result of an inquiry which is proceeding. Martin throatous legal action. A representative meeting discussed the' proposed memorial to the late Rev. James Chalmers, which it was suggested should take the form of a mission steamer for the New Guinea rivers and the evangelisation of the district where Dr Chalmers wasmurdered.
