One man backed him for five thousand. Other backers brought tho total to eight thousand. King was badly hit. Beauchamp was disqualified for twelve months for alleged running in the interests of other competitors. The stewards recommended the League to disqualify him for life. From a good start, Lewis looked like making a runawav race of it. Beauchamp paced Martin up, and then retired, on entering for the last lap. Middleton was leading at this point. Martin, however, passed him half a lap from home, and won a fine race by three lengths. The time was 4.29 3-5.
