WELLINGTON NEWS.
THE ISLAND BAY SUICIDE,
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. An inquest was held to-day on the body of Edward Malthus, who hanged himself at Island Bay. The verdict returned was suicide while temporarily insane. The deceased had on two occasions been an inmate of Sunnyside Asylum, and had suffered from melancholia. PACIFIC CABLE.
The Premier has received information from the Chairman of the Pacific Cable Board, London, that he expects the cable to reach New Zealand about the middle of March. RETURNING NEW ZEALANDERS. The Premier of Tasmania cables that the following troopers left Hobart yesterday aboard the Waiwera for Wellington : Privates Johnston, Foley, Fufnell, Kelly, and Bugler Minific. INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET. The cricket match between Wellington and Canterbury was to have begun this afternoon, but stoady rain set in early and cho game had to be postponed till 11 a.m. to-morrow.
KOTUKU INQUIRY.
The inquiry into the striking of the Kotuku on the Walker rook’ while passing through Jackson’s Passage was continued to-day. Captain Nordstrum said he had been going through the passage for years, and had found it a very tight fit, though he thought that a nine-knot vessel should be able to contend with the tide. Captain Manning, of the Rotomahana, said he also had passed many times in other steamers. Vessels which could steam nine knots should get through safely. He did not think Captain Kennedy could be blamed. This opinion was also concurred in by Captain Smith, Superintendent of the Mercantile Marine, who also gave evidence as to the erratic nature of the tides during November. A MASTERTON CASE.
The Masterton Hornsby and Mo.riarty ease has concluded, a settlement between the parties being agreed upon. Tlfe basis of the judgment is that Hornsby publish six eonseoutive apologies in his paper and pay £5 to the hospital and costs of the defondant, which were fixed at £BS. DREDGING. The dredging return from the Kohikohi dredge is 270 z 9dwt for 122 hours.
