USED FOR FOOTBALL SIGNALS,
Des Moines, U.S., Oct. 26. The use of the names of the prophets and apostles in giving football signals is a novelty just introduced by the team representing the Bible Department of Drake University. Instead of the customary, “23-11-12, 82-10” given by the quarter-back when signalling for the right halfback to take the ball and make a plunge through left tackle, the play is indicated by ‘‘John, Peter, Nebuchadnezzar, Danial, Noah, Antioch. ' It was suggested to one of the divinity students on the eleven that possibly the signal might be construed by some to bo sacrilegous. Deau Hill M. Bell, oue of the loading spirits of the university, replied to this charge that it was foolish ; the more Bible names one hears, the better ; and that of all places the Bible should not be lost sight of the gridiron is moat important. He suggested that the Bible students had adopted Biblical names and terms in preparing their code of signals as being least likely to be understood by their opponents from the more wordly departments, Intense rivalry for the football class championship !>?.S been engendered by the offering of a costly cup to the wiunerby Coach Host. The “Diviuito” are odds-on favorites in the race.
