Mail Service.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. • Mr Dunnett, representative of the Oceanic Company here, has received letters from Mr Spreckles with refereence to the proposals of New Zealand for an eighteen months’ contract. Mr Spreckles considers the offer altogether inadequate, being much lower for a three-weekly service than he received for a monthly service, with very much smaller vessels. There are also conditions in the proposed contract at variance with the United States contract, under which the Oceanic Company draws a large subsidy. These preclude the acceptance of the contract in its present form. Mr Dunnett says the terms offered are not good enough to induce Mr Spreckles to tie his company up. It is probable he will negotiate with the Federal Government of Australia with a view to include Brisbane instead of Auckland as a first port of call. Meanwoile the service will be probably carried on as usual.
