GISBORNE HORSES AT AUCKLAND.

(Special to Timks.)

Auckland, last night.

; The races at Takapuna on Saturday had a special interest for Gisborne horsemen, 1 three horses well-known in that district being engaged. In the Birthday Handicap Tauhei was one of four engaged, 1 Chaase’s pair, St. Ursula and St. Olga, and Sparkling Water being the others. When tbe barrier was raised Tauhei was tbo last to move, and for the first half of tbo distance hung on to St. Ursula, tbo Gisborno jockey’s orders being to this effect. Half a mile from homo Ready parted company with St. Ursula, and started in pursuit of Sparkling Water, who by this time had twelve lengths’ lead. At tho distance the grey bad a neck’s advantage of the leader, but the long run proved too much for her, and Sparkling Water, finishing gamely, managed to make a dead heat of it. It was the general opinion of those competent to judge that the grey must have won easily had she kept closer to Sparkling Water from the start. Mr Harding’s fine maro looked well, although she was much lighter than when she raced in Gisborne. She has also changed her coat, and is not tho handsome maro that she was aforetime. From a racing point of view she is much improved, and should run well to-morrow. Lpon St. Ursula and St. Olga returning to tho paddock, tho public indulged in considerable hooting, hut tho mattor was not taken notice of by the stewards, who were satisfied that both horses had done their best. In the Maiden Hurdles, Ballinger ran a great horse, and, jumping splendidly, carried tho field along at a merry pace until the turn for home. Tho victory of Nereid in the Hack would he welcome nows to Gisbornites. She was the first away, and, although challenged by Lady Soult in the straight, lasted long enough to win by a short neck. Buchanan had threo wins on Saturday, and his excellent horsemanship was greatly admired.
