Wellington, last night. The Wellington City Council has received demands from the grooms and conductors of the tramways for increases which it estimates at about A4OOO a year, and has decided to carry the matter straight to the Arbitration Court. Captain Seddon, son of the Premier, lately returned from the war, was entertained at a social last evening, and presented with a dressing-case by the Clyde Quay branch of the Liberal and Labor Federation.

McKerrotv is retiring from the position of Chairman of the Land Purchase Board, and will be succeeded by Mr Barron, at present Undersecretary for Lands and Acting SurveyorGeneral.

Dunedin, last night. In the Supreme Court this morning His Honor said, in dealing with Mary Pearce, convicted of the lluby terrace shooting case, that he did not think the truth was given by either side. He complimented the jury, and thought the ends of justice would be met by fining accused £5 for unlawfully wounding and f or assault.
