Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman, speaking at Lancaster, said that Lord Salisbury retains no shred of independence. Mr
Chamberlain's insults to the Powers had caused more injury than all the speeches made. The Liberals urged restoration of the Cape Colony’s civil rights, restoration of the prosperity and loyalty of South Africa by friendliness and hearty cooperation on equal terms.
