MANSLAUGHTER CASE.
THIRD TRIAL OF DR WILKINS. A STRONG REPRIMAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, last night. The third trial of Dr John Wilkins, on a charge of having on or about May 17 last, committed manslaughter by killing Mary O’Dowd, commenced to-day. The Crown Prosecutor contended that tho evidence indicated that an illegal operation had been performed. The evidence was similar to that given in the previous trials. Prisoner, who conducted his own case, frequently made comments on the evidence of witnesses, and was more than once reprimanded by the .1 udge, who, on one occasion remarked, “ You seem to think you aro privileged to insult the witness, insult me, and waste the time of tho jury. I have seen a great many low rutlians in that dock cross-examine witnesses ; I have never sceu one do it so badly as you.”
Dr Wilkins replied: “Yes, very well Your Honor.”
His Honor informed the jury that in law this cross-examination was ontircly beside the question. The caso will be continued to-morrow.
