By Telegraph—Press Aseociation—Copyright Received Nov. 22, 8.17 p.ru. Sydney, Nov. 22. The weather turned out gloriously, the heat of the sun being tempered by a cool breeze. There were 9000 people present. The wicket w*as in perfect condition, but the cricket fell below- what- such a wicket should have produced. _ ... Gregory (captain of the New South Wales team) won the toss, and decided that his team should bat. Trumper and Hopkins gave an excellent display, the former hitting freely. During his partnership with Noble the English bowling was heavily punisned, Gunn’s first over giving the pair ten runs. Poidevin compiled his score somewhat laboriously, hut lost his wicket with a weak stroke. Trumpcr’s innings contained one chance towards its end. Eventually he lost his wicket by playing forward to a tempting one from Braund. A good deal of interest centered in the play of Clarke, the North Sydney colt, who knocked up his score attractively. The play generally was tedious ; the fielding of tho Englishmen being fine, kept runs down. Jcssop particularly played brilliantly. Hopkins made the hit of the day, sending the ball into the pavilion. When Howell, the last man, partnered Kelly, both went in for hard hitting. Howell knocked up his score in dashing style. Trying a risky run lie lost his wicket. In bowling, Jessop gets in some occasionally fast stuff, hut Braund troubles the batsmen with his variety more than anyone else. Gunn frequently was no-balled.
