Speaking on the Bill to increase the honorariums of members of Parliament, the member for Palmerston North contended that members’ honorarium should not be increased without the verdict of the electors being given. It was not right that members should raise their salarios without referring to the people. Personally, he did not think that members were too well paid, but an increase should not be made without consulting the people, and the present was not the time to increase the honorarium, when Ministers must be at their wits’ end to find money for ordinary purposes. Referring to the delay in proceeding with the erection of the new Town Hall, Wellington, a councillor at the last meeting of the Council, said it was time something was done, or somebody would be ffering to buy the foundation stone,
