BOWLING.

WHATAUPOKO V. GISBORNE,

The first match for the pennant presented by Mr J. W. Witty will be played on the Gisborne Bowling Ciub’s green this afternoon, commencing at three o’clock sharp. The competing teams are Gisborne v. Whataupoko, and as the latter club are putting in two strong rinks, a close game may be expected. Although Gisborne won the pennant last year, they were defeated by Whataupoko in the first match, and it remains to be seen whether the North Gisbornites will this afternoon repeat the performance of last year. The teams are as follows:

Gisborne : Massey, Quigley. Gaudin, and Ponsford (skip) ; Humphreys, Robertson. McGowan, and Coleman (skip), j Whataupoko : Nicholas, Hookey, Ferris, I and Side-bottom (skip) ; Martin, Ambridge, I Birss, Simson (skip). I The Gisborne teams are fairly represen- : tative of the club, and are quite as strong ias last year. Ponsford's team includes ! Quigley and Massey, who are virtually j first year’s players, as both joined the club | when the season was pretty well on last year. Ponsford, who is skipping one of the teams, is an old and experienced ! general, and whichever team comes j against him to-day will require to be in their best form to win. Coleman’s team is a fairly strong one, and, with the ex- | eoption of Robertson, are old hands at the j game. Robertson has shown good form ■ during tho past two seasons, and deserves j his place. Simson will be in charge of j the strongest Whataupoko rink, and after . his performance against Newmarket in | January last, should make it pretty warm I for the strongest of the town teams. Side- i bottom’s team have been practising most j assiduously, and with the skip himself, in j good form, should render a good account j of themselves.
