Legislative Council

Wellington, last night. The Council met <n 2.30 p.m. The Payment of Members Hill passed all its stages practically without debate.

EVENING SITTING

The Council resumed at 7.30.

Tho following Bills were passed through the final stages: Public Trust Offices Amendment, Criminal Code Act Amendment, New Zealand Ensign, Railway Authorisation, and Military Pensions.

The House met at 2.3 U p.m. Amendments in the Cook Islands Bill wore brought down by Governor's message. They provided that on all good- imported into the islands from countries other than New Zealand, and which are now on tho free list, there shall bo paiu an ad valorem duty not exceeding ten per cent as the Gjveruor-in-Couucij may from time to time determine.

Mr Homes strongly opposod tho amendments, urging that it was ail attempt to make the traders there pay for the expenses of the administration.

The amendments were agreed to by 31 to 21.

The Companies Bill, Registration of Births Extension Bill, and Victoria College Site Bill were read a second lime.

The House rose at 5.30 p.iu. EVENING SITTING. The House resumed at 7.30. Tho Companies Bill, Registration of Births Extension Bill, and Mining Act Amendment Bill passed tho final stages. The Victoria College Site Bill was strongly opposed in committee, and eventually progress was reported.
