AUCKLAND SPECIAL.
TAUHEI’S RUN IN THE FLYING,
[Special to Times.]
Auckland, last night. Among those present at the Auckland Races to-day were many Gisbornites, including Messrs J. A. Harding, J, W. Nolan, Mason, Rhodes, Adams, Barron, and Major Dean Pitt. The Gisborne rider, Buchanan, was successful in gaining two lirsts and two seconds, each proving to be the result of clever riding. The Gisborne horse Tauhei was scratched for the City Handicap. Notwithstanding that Tauhei was not looking up to form, the public made him a redhot favorite in the Flying Handicap. This, no doubt, was due to telegrams received from Gisborne during the day, stating that it was a moral for the Gisborne mare, with Chris. Ready on her back. Tauhei was last to got off the mark, receiving a very bad start indeed, Ready stating that ho could not get her to move when the barrier went up. She was lying last until the straight was reached, and, under punishment, Mr Harding's colors were seen to pass through the big field, and gain second place. So close, indeed, was the finish that at first it was thought to be a dead heat. “ You are too fast for me in Auckland,” remarked Mr Harding to Mr Evett, the handicapper, after Tauhei's defeat.
