Sir Hector Macdonald.

Wanganui, last night, j Sir Hector Macdonald was taken up the j river about twenty miles this morning in Mr Hatrick’s Manuwai, on board of which were a number of leading citizens and set tiers. The day being exceptionally j fine, the tlip was most enjoyable. Sir ! Hector was delighted with the tin: scenery ; and regretted his inability to go to Uotorua via the river. He left for New Plymouth at 2 o'clock. New Plymouth, last night. A largo and enthusiastic crowd wove present on the arrival of the mail train to-night, when Sir Hector Macdonald j received a warm welcome. After being | introduced by the Mayor to prominent i local citizens and Volunteer officers, lie j ! was conducted to the Commonwealth Hotel, where the Garrison Band played suitable airs. The Mayor, in a brief speech, welcomed Sir Hector Macdonald, on behalf of the citizens. The General briefly replied. He was then introduced to several veterans and leading ladies and gentlemen. He partook of refreshments, and was afterwards driven to St. Mary's Church, where a large number congregated, and inspected the hatchment erected to the memory of the Imperial : troops who served in the Maori wars. Sir Hector Macdonald was then driven to the breakwater, where he joined the j Kotoiti for Auckland.
