As Mr Hallam will be leaving town shortly, application should be made at once. During the Vafin's absence on the Coast Messrs Kennedy and Evans' j steamer Tawera will tender the steamers i in the roadstead.
The post office notifies that for the present the postage to Samoa is 21d per half ounce instead of Id as previously announced.
Sergeant Siddells leaves for the South on Wednesday next on a fortnight’s holiday. During ft is absence his place will be taken by Sergeant Smart, of Napier. The Union Steamship Company call for tenders for the supply of fresh meat to their steamers ’at Gisborne for twelve months from the Ist of December next. Tenders close at noon to-day. A purse containing a sum of money was found at the Makaraka raeeeourso yesterday, and handed to tlio polieo. Owner can havo same by furnishing particulars to Times office and paying cost of advertisement.

A meeting of influential citizens at Palmerston North decided to petition the Borough Council to take a poll for the loan for tho erection of a municipal Opera House. The matter is being taken up with great spirit, and the money is being subscribed for expenses. The meeting of tho Whataupoko lload Board called for last evening lapsed for want of a quorum, only tho Chairman and Mr D. M. Orr attending. Tho meeting was adjourned until Friday next at 2.80 p.m. So as to cause no inconvenience to workmen, the Chairman signed their cheques.
The annual fixture between town and country cricketers this afternoon will bo played on the Victoria Domain, and a good contest should result. The town eleven will be selected from the following : Neale, Cole, Macdonald, Hill, McCredio, Gibson, Porter, Seymour, Fairlie, Iveson, Coleman, Dodd, Lyttelton, Dcsßarres. The excursion by the Waikare to the Sounds' gives promise of being a great success. The Waikare leaves Dunedin on Monday, loth January. The deck cabins arc nearly all engaged, and applications are coming in freely. There a,re two or three dock rooms still vacant, and intending passengers should secure them early. The results of the weight-guessing competition of the A. and P. Show were announced yesterday : —The sheep weighed 84511)3, and Messrs K. Macdonald, James Langham, and J. Townley each guessed the exact weight, and divide the prize. The bullock weighed 142Ubs, and the nearest guess was 14201b5, and came from Mr E. Harris. The second prize will be divided between Messrs E. E. Murphy, T. Howarth, and L. Carron,who guessed 1419, 1419, and 14231'0s respectively. A fire broke out in Messrs T. Buxton and Co.’s stores, Tomuka, on Saturday afternoon. The back portion of the building was completely destroyed, and the front portion considerably damaged. But
for the fire brigade the whole of the building must havo been destroyed. Buxton’s ' loss is very heavy. It is impossible to estimate it yet. The stock was insured in the Victorian Insurance Company for ,£6OO, and the building in the same office for £2OO. The cause of the fire is a complete mystery, Canon and Mrs Webb, who leave for Hawke’s Bay on the 80th inst., arc to be tendered a farewell by the parishioners on Tuesday afternoon next at a garden party (from half-past 2 tiil 6 o'clock), to be hold at the Te Rau grounds, which havo been kindly placed at the disposal of the vestry ! and Ladies’ Committee for the occasion by the Lev. I An amusing incident occurred in the j luncheon rooms at the races yesterday. A j number of persons wore seated at the j table on a somewhat rickotty form, when, one of them suddenly rising, the form j gave way, and tic- persons seated cm is were sent in all attitudes on to the floor. To make matters worse, a lady attendant came to the rescue and placed the form back in position, and a few minutes later a hungry individual, not knowing what had happened; seated himself on it, only to bo sent sprawling on tire broad of his back on the floor, Needless to add, the persons at the adjoining tables enjoyed the fun at the expense of their neighbours, one wag remarking, “ All my work, you know ; all my work,”
In New Zealand Herald “Lynx ” in his usual column states: I have heard on good authority that Lockie Gannon will take charge of some of the crews at West End this year. Gannon, as an oarsman, has a record to be proud of—stroke in 10 races in two seasons, and never beaten, and this before he was 20 years of age. If he can coach ” as well as he proved he could row, West End should have some good crews. Gannon will have the advice of one of the coaches of past years, and will no doubt be very successful in his efforts to further the best interests of his club.
