WAIROA NOTES.

Thk social in connection with the Caledonian Society was held on the 17th inst., when about 40 couples put in an appearance. The music was supplied by Miss Bax in her usual finished stylo, and extras were played by Misses Parker and N. Poyzer and Mr Sargent. Messrs Cosgrove and R. Wilson made efficient M.C.’s. Supper was handed round about midnight, and shortly afterwards the social was concluded. The whole function was most enjoyable, and a most successful one. Mr T. Bax, hairdresser and tobacconist, has now moved into his new premises next door to Mr J. Mayo, saddler. The saloon is nicely fitted up with all conveniences, and two chairs are always waiting to oblige customers, who will receive every comfort and attention from Mr Bax. The shop is splendidly stocked with cigars, cigarettes, tobaccos, pipes, etc., and on being lit up for tho first time on Saturdayevening, tho 19th inst., presented a picture. The window was very nicely decorated, and attracted the public attention. We hope for the proprietor'every success.

Last Saturday the weather was extremely cold. Snow fell in differentplaces in tho district. At- Waikaremoana a very heavy fall took place, being several inches deop in places. Tho Dramatic Society are getting on famously with the comody, “ Pike O’Callaghan,” and will stage the play in about a month’s time. As the comody is a good one, tho Society’s efforts should be rewarded with a hugo house. A meeting of tho working committee of tho Wairoa County Ram Fair and Show was held at Parker’s Hall, Frasertown, on the 19th inst., at 2 p.m. The following wero present: Messrs Sinclair (chairman), S. J. Bennett, F. Mcltae, Chapman, J. E. Taylor, A. E. Beckett, and F. Parker. Mr M. E. Groome was appointed judge for light hacks, ponies, and jumping events, and Mr J. Anderson judge for cattle, merino sheep, and dogs. Re judging longwooled sheep and draught horses, the Secretary was instructed to telegraph for a decided answer. Tho date of the Show was fixed for the 15th January, 1902, and the sale of’ stock on the following day. It was deoided to strike out the leaping match from the programme. Proposed by Mr Bennett, seconded by Mr Sinclair, that a prize be awarded for tho best single turnout, sulky or gig, to be shown in harness and driven ; carried.

It was decided to add a Lloyd-Lindsay competition. All stock to bo on the ground at 10 o’clock. The following stewards were appointed : Horses, Messrs Lomax, Broadhurst, Bennett ; sheep, Messrs A. and T. Taylor, E. and W. A. Neale; cattle, Messrs M. Chapman, F. Steed, W. C. Munro ; pigs, Mr T. Walker ; dogs, Messrs D. Munro, A. Forsyth, D. Walker ; poultry, Messrs W. Cowper and E. E. Hallett. It was decided to purchase a marquee for the sum of £1 10s. The next committee meeting was fixed for Saturday, November 30th, at 2 p.m. Proposed by Mr Parker, seconded by Mr Bennett, that all entries close on December 23rd: carried. The meeting then closed. The Huramua Mounted Rifles are reminded of their Government parade, which will bo held on the 80th inst. As the Government Instructor, Sergt.-Major Tuck, will be present, a full muster is requested. A committee meeting of the Wairoa Racing Club was held on Tuesday night last to receive the report of the Course Committee. Mr Brituell was appointed Chairman. Tho following recommendations were made : That the partition between the'diniog-room and the publican's booth be removed, the whole to be thrown into the present dining-room ; that a leanto be erected at the back of the grandstand for a publican’s booth, tho whole of the length of the stand and ten feet wide, the present shutters to the publican's booth to be utilised ; that the internal portion of the grandstand be painted with one coat of paint, the outside, with the judge’s box and totalisator house to be painted two coats. The course to be skipped to remove thistles and rushes, the depressions to be filled in and turfed, and the training track ploughed, disced aud harrowed. The secretary stated that the work of removing rushes, etc., was according to the lease, the work of the lessee, also the ploughing of the training track. It was decided to notify the lessee to have the work done as soon as possible. It was decided to make the alterations to the buildings as suggested by the Course Committee, the secretary to draw up plans and specifications.
