The import duty of half-a-crown per cwt. on oysters imposed by the Commonwealth will be a blessing to Eew Zealand if it stops the exportation of oysters from this colony altogether. For years past, notwithstanding close seasons and other means of protection, our oyster beds have been ruthlessly sacrificed ; to supply the oysters employed little or no labour, they were handled by Australian middlemen, and Eew Zealand gained no advantages from the trade. On the other hand, oysters were made scarce to us, and the price materially raised. Eow, with a substantial import duty in Sydney, we can probably depend upon our natural heritage of oysters—fresh, cheap, and plentiful—being restored to us.—Observer,
