ELECTION OF DILAINAGE BOARD.
By Telegraph—Pross Association, Dunedin, lastt nigh. The polling for the election of the Drainage Board for Dunedin and district excited a fair amount of interest. Six city and three suburban candidute were chosen, namely, Mr R. Glendinning, Dr. Brown, Air Sidey (Mayor of Caversham), Messrs Annand (Alornington), Gore, Scott, Aloloney, Simpson, Handcoek. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED AIURDER. At the Police Court Alary Pearce was committed for trial on a charge of attempting to murder Airs Jane licnwick. Bail was allowed. Tho charge of throwing boiling water on Airs Renwick was adjourned.
DISPUTE BETWEEN UNION CO AND SEAMENS’ UNION.
Reference has been filed in the industrial dispute between the Union S.S. Company and the Federated Seamens’ Unions. This is the first instance in which the employers have sought to benefit by tho Conciliation and Arbitration Act, the company having submitted proposals which the Union rejected. COACH BUILDERS. The dispute between Southland Coach AVorkers’ Union and some employers came before the Conciliation to-day. The employers in Gore and Otautau cited were unrepresented, and the Union sought to have them brought under the award. The Board reserve its decision. PREVALENCE OF SICKNESS.
The prevalence of sickness has had a serious effect upon the school average attendance, which in the whole district for last quarter was 16,862 out of 20,048. The average attendance has not been so low since 1881.
