Wairoa Harbor Board.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Tun monthly meeting of the Wairoa Harbor Board was held on the loth inst. Present : Messrs Corkell, Brown, Moloney, Britnell. A new by-law regulating the collection of wharfages was adopted, to come into force on November Ist. A letter was received from the County Council re timber taken for a bridge over Witty’s drain by the Hospital Committee. Proposed by Mr Corkell, seconded by Mr Britnell, that the Hospital Committee be granted the timber referred to. It was decided to get all waste timber lying at Tureroa carted to the heads as soon as the contractor completed the wharf.

Mr Brown drew attention to a good wharf at Pakowhai, which was covered in silt. The first time it was exposed it should be disposed of. From the Marine Department and the Hon. Jas. Carroll re application for £2OOO subsidy, the latter advising the Board not to be too expectant in the matter. The Board considered that there was still a chance of a further grant, and what had been done should he followed up. MiBrown proposed, and Mr Moloney seconded, that a petition be prepared for signature in the harbor rating district, asking for a further grant of £2OOO for the river protection works.—Carried. The pilot sent m a report of soundings on the bar, which was considered very satisfactory. It was decided to further notify thepi’ot that he is expected to take soundings when the Board considers it necessary.

The Secretary laid on the table a report showing the cost of the works, since day labor was instituted, and the value of work done :—The total cost of the work was £976 17s 6d. The estimate of work from January, 1901, was £l3lß 19s.—The Board considered the return a very satisfactory one, but Mr Moloney was of opinion that some amount should be written off for depreciation of plant. From the Customs Collector, N'apier, forwarding return of moneys due, £ll. From the Wharfinger, forwarding returns for month, £24 Us 6d, borne other dasuliory business was attended too. Accounts to the amount of £96 3s 2d were passed for payment, and the meeting closed.
