A number of stone-masons arrived yesterday from Melbourne to fulfil an engagement to prepare pitchers to lay aiong the Auckland Electric tramway line now in course of construction. A NEW YACHT.
The thirty-foot yacht built in Auckland by- the well-known builders, Messrs Logan Brothers, for Mr AV. G. Turnbull, of Wellington, sailed for the latter place via the East Coast on Sat urday afternoon. Should the weather prove favorable the handsome yacht will probably call at Gisborne. MAORI SUPERSTITION. On the death of the Maori chief Major Fox at Maketu recently—one of those who had received a medal at the hands of Royalty—the natives were somewhat pouri (“ dark ” in heart) over the fact that so many recipients of Royal attention had in a brief period passed over that bourne from wnich no one returns. Two died at Maketu, one at Taranaki, and one at the Bay of Islands. AMERICA CUP. Much oxcitement prevailed in Auckland over the contest for the America Cup race. DEATH OF OLD IDENTITY. Another old identity has passed away in the person of Mrs James Cooper, in her 83rd year. Deceased leaves a grown-up family of three sons and one daughter. One of her sons is Mr J. Arthur Cooper, of Gisborne.
