Publican’s Handicap : Val Rosa 1, Hcsper 2. ENERGETIC MAORIS. Those who hold the opinion that tho Maoris arc a lazy race would do well to pay Raglan a visit just now, when I think they would admit that our natives are very industrious. Men, women, and children are busy from early morn till late at night clearing their holdings, planting, fishing, etc., while a large number of men are employed on the roads and in tho bush. White labor is very scarce. SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

A serious accident occurred at the Herald works yesterday, resulting in Mr A. Good, overseer of the lithographic machine room, losing three fingers of the right hand. Ho was engaged at the printing machine, when he put out his hand to try and catch a piece of paper that was amongst the rollers. His hand was drawn in and crushed, but the thumb and forefinger escaped. Three fingers of the injured hand were amputated last night. Mr Good is a brother of Mr W. Good, of Gisborne.
