EDUCATION BOARD.
(Special to Times.) Napier, last night. The Gisborne application for a new school at Taruheru was referred to the Inspector and the Makauri School Coimnitteo for a report. The Makauri application for £0 for a gymnasium was not entertained, lteporting on tho condition of this school MiHill said that the results at last examination were not as satisfactory as they ought to have been, but ho could not say that tho master was to blame. Tho social and economic conditions prevailing compelled the absence of tho ehildron from school to help parents, and it was unjust to blame tho staff for faults over which they had no control. A copy of Mr llili's report and a petition forwarded in connection with the school is to be sent on to the Committee.
Miss Hallctt was appointed pupil teacho: at Motaka.
Waercnga-a-hika’s complaints as to the manner in which certain money voted for improvements had been expended were referred to Mr Quigley for -x report; if the necessary alterations will not exceed £~>, the work is to be done. In reference to the complaint from Mr Brown as to his daughter being put back to Standard 1., which she had passed two years previously, Mr Hill reported that this course was not allowable under tire regulations. Wairoa correspondence relative to master purchasing books for native children is to bo sent on to the Department. A swimming vote of £'A Os was allotted to Gisborne; Frasertown, 7s 8d; Matawhero, 10s ; Patutahi, 10s ; Tolago Bay, 10s ; Wairoa, 15s ; Waerenga-a-hika, 10s ; Wuinui, ss. The Nuhaka school is to be carried on as at present; the Department to be informed that the grant is not nearly sufficient to warrant the building of a new school.
Mr West-all's motion adopting a uniform set of school books was carried, and ordered to come in force in each school after next annual examination. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Napier, last night.
At the meeting of the Hawke's BayEducation Board to-day reference was made to the fact that many country schools were closed on account of the number of school teachers who were suffering from influenza, and owing to there being no relieving teachers available. The difficulty of obtaining relieving teachers was commented on. It was stated that tho Board had only two relieving teachers, and this was not half enough, but University students wero averse to leaving during the middle of a term, so the schools had to be closed.
The committee appointed to consider the question of establishing technical classes under the Manual and Technical Instruction Act made the following recommendations : —That Saturday technical classes for teachers be started in Napier, commencing on the first Saturday of October ; that intimation be sent to the teachers, together with such information as may bo necessary, bearing on the work it is proposed to undertake ; that application be made to the Minister of Education for his approval of the classes under section 5 of the Manual and Technical Instruction Act ; that the course of instruction bo as follows : —Modelling in plasticine, brush drawing, model drawing, and the principles underlying it, elementary design and color work, elementary principles of ornamental colors, and the mixing of tints ; that an examination beheld at the close of the term, and certificates issued to those who qualify in one or more of the subjects, and obtain a satisfactory report.
