NATIVE AFFAIRS.
(Special to Times.) Auckland, last night
In the financial debate Hone lleke expatiated on the grievances of the Maoris in c-onnection with the administration of native lands. He denied the right of Maliuta, the alleged “ -Maori Kina," to claim kingship over the tribes.
Hon. J. Carroll, Native .Minister, defended the native policy of the Government and their action in regard to recent legislation relating to Maoris. Ho severely handled lletmre lxaihau, representative of the Western Maori District, who hiul spoken on Thursday evening, showing that the Kingites had been favorable to the Native Lands Administration Act until the question of boundaries between the Ngatihiuis and Ngatiiuaniapotos had been settled, when they gave expression to new grievances. Regarding what had been alleged as to native land purchases, he said all transactions had been discontinued. As to the refusal of the " King " to go to Rotorua, lie said the Rotorua chiefs had extended a most hospitable inx itation to the so-called Maori King. He denied that the authority of the Maori King was respected outsido the Waikato tribe, and he thought the time had arrived when the Kingites should recognise that their dream of setting up a separate kingdom must be dissipated.
