liis Honor Mr Justice Gonclly arrived from Auckland by the Zealandia yesterday. The Bov. Father Crotty left for Auckland by the Moura yesterday. Mr Oborlin Browne, a well-known Auckland musician, arrived by the Zealandia yesterday. lie intends to remain in Gisborne for three weeks or a month. Mr and Mrs Claude Sherrill returned to Gisborne by the Zealandia yesterday. Mr and Mrs Charles Nicholson were passengers by the Zealandia yesterday, and intend taking up their residence in this district for a time. Sergeant James Poyntor, of the Third Contingent, returned to Gisborne yesterday, and was warmly welcomed by his many friends. Mr A. Spoakman, formerly of the Elingamite, is now purser of the Zealandia, in place of Mr D. Sampson, who has proceeded to Melbourne for orders. Mr Herbert 11. HcCosta, of Gisborne, who, with his mother and sister, arrived in England by the s.s. Ortona, called on me yesterday (says the London correspondent of the Xew Zealand Herald) after spending a few weeks at Yarmouth and Brighton. Shortly after leaving Fremantle he had a heat stroke, the effects of which he felt for several days, but ho has tow completely recovered. On the s.s. Jrtona, Mr [XJcCosta tells me. there were piite 60 New Zealanders, and one of

them, an aged man named Mr Doull, died on the voyage, the cause of death being attributed partly to heat apoplexy and partly to old age. There were two other deaths on the voyage. Mr DeCosta and his mother and sister intend visiting Scotland, and on their return will go to France and Germany. Lieutenant-Colonel R. H. Davies, of Hawora, late of the First Contingent, has been appointed to the command of the Auckland volunteer district. At the volunteer officers’ examination for commissions there were 02 candiqates.
