NELSON SCHOOL OF MUSIC.
OPENED BY COUNTESS RAN FURLY. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Nelson, last night, Tho Nelson School of lusic was opened to-night by the Countess of Riiuturly in the presence of a largo audience. The concert hall of tho school is said to he the finest in tho colony, and seats five hundred of an audience, in addition to the chorus of two hundred and orchestra, etc. Mr Cock, on behalf of the trustees, asked tho Countess to open tho school. Ho explained how tho idea of forming tho school originated, and gave the history of its work and the movement to erect buildings, which altogether cost £SOOO. Tho school was affiliated with tho Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music, and its diplomas necessitated the passing of examinations of those in the institutions, as well as three years’ study in the Nelson school. The Countess congratulated those connected witli the school on tho success achieved, and hoped to see further presentations by generous citizens. Her Ladyship then declared the school open, cheers being given in her honor. An ode composed by Ilcrr Lcmmor for the occasion, with words by Mr Joynt of the University, was thon sung, the solos and choruses and orchestration being greatly admired. A concert followed, closing with tho “ Hallelujah Chorus.” The proceedings were a great success.
